aCTION TIMELINE

October 5, 2006 – The Center and Pacific Rivers Council filed suit over the California Department of Fish and Game’s longstanding failure to consider the impacts of fish stocking on sensitive aquatic species throughout the state.

May 10, 2007 – In response to our 2006 lawsuit, a Sacramento Superior Court judge ruled that California’s fish-stocking program must comply with the California Environmental Quality Act and that the Department of Fish and Game must conduct a public review of the program’s impacts.

November 11, 2008 – The Sacramento Superior Court ordered the California Department of Fish and Game into talks with the Center and Pacific Rivers Council to develop interim measures to limit harm to native species caused by fish stocking.

November 20, 2008 – The Center and Pacific Rivers Council reached agreement with the California Department of Fish and Game on interim measures to limit harm to native species caused by fish stocking.

January 18, 2010 – In response to the Center and Pacific Rivers Council’s lawsuits, the California Department of Fish and Game released a flawed final environmental impact report analyzing the impacts of stocking of hatchery trout and salmon on native species. Although the report disclosed many severe impacts of the stocking program, it failed to analyze the full impacts of stocking or adopt adequate measures to reduce the program’s harm.

February 10, 2010 – The Center sued Fish and Game over the environmental impacts of stocking millions of hatchery fish every year, particularly the harmful impacts on native fish, amphibians, and other wildlife. The suit asserted that the January 18 impact report utterly failed to analyze the full impacts of nonnative fish stocking or adopt adequate measures to reduce the program’s harm.
